GREETING: how do people greet each other in Tunisia?

Greeting ways in Tunisia

 

In Tunisia there several ways of greeting between people of different categories  :gender ,age and position.

1/ Between men and women : generally between a man and a woman who don’t know each other ,they just greet with a handshake or oral greeting like saying :’’ salem or bonjour ,how are you doing?’’And a man and a woman from the family or relatives it is allowed to kiss each other on the cheeks along with the handshake .           

2/ Between women :

generally women are greeting with cheek kissing,

but the older women have a very special way of kissing especially old southern women of Tunisia:

o   sometimes several kisses in one cheek.

o   two kisses in the left cheek .

o   four kisses in the right cheek .

3/ Between Girls: two close friends : young ladies have different greeting ways such as :

o   a cute, light pinch on the cheek.

o   high –five / a hug

o   kisses in the air

o   Pinch on the waist

o   oral greeting: Ahla , cava ,cvn

4/ Between Men: they give cheek kissing or a handshake.

 

Between close friends :  

* a handshake *a pat on the shoulder

5/ Ages : generally the younger persons  are the ones who start greeting the older.
